Anck-Su-Namun was born in the 12th Century B.C to the powerful Medjai chieftain Baqir; head of the Pharaoh's personal guard.

The Medjai, a people whose only purpose was to create warriors and guards for the Pharoah, their entire culture centered around serving and protection. The Pharoah maintained that as they were kept separate from the general populace they were unbiased and fair; in reality their favoured position and indoctrinated servitude made them impossible to bribe or turn against him. It is difficult to see the man who feeds your family, gives you a position in society, gives you power, as your captor.

Into this culture Anck was born. She had two older brothers who had both sickened and died before her. When her mother died in childbirth, her father saw her as his only hope. Baqir was not a soft man, and he lusted for power. He knew he had climbed to the pinnacle of Medjai success; chieftain to his people, head of person guards for his Pharaoh. But he wanted more.

So he proposed a plan. A single guard, trained from birth to protect the Pharaoh no matter where he was, what he was doing, or who he was with. A shadow whose function was only to serve and protect. And what better shadow, than one so insignificant that the Pharaoh's enemies wouldn’t even see it?

A woman, Baqir suggested. My daughter, Anck-su-namun.

Of course his suggestion was initially met with amused derision. Did the Medjai guard feel so inadequate he wished his daughter to take on the mantle of responsibility?

However, soon even the most loud of naysayers could see the sense; there was increased unrest throughout the kingdom. It made sense to have a single guard that would accompany the Pharaoh everywhere he went. And a woman... well. They remembered Baqir’s dead wife’s beauty and smiled. There were some uses women had that granted them access to all sorts of places.

Her training began as soon as she could stand up; she was strengthened and trained in endurance and agility, spending long lessons with dance tutors as well as with weapons masters. They focused on close quarters combat; her job would be to eliminate immediate threats and immobilise them; not to go onto the battle field and attack with broad impunity. She was trained to react not to danger aimed at herself, but at a specific mark who she learned to protect instinctively, with her skills and her body. She learned to lie, to seem stupid and vapid and insignificant, to blend into the background and fade from the memory. She learned to kill.

Then, when she was eleven years old, she was trained in the arts of the seven sighs. She was to remain by her Pharoah day and night. Not, however, as his bodyguard. Instead she would be his courtesan.

She was given to him when she was fifteen.

At first she resisted his advances. She knew what her place was, and her function, but the horror of her situation forced her to step back fearfully every time he reached for her. Her resistance didn't last long; Seti knew what he wanted, and he knew what to break to get it.

First, he broke her innocence. He took what he wanted from her body, and if she was lucky he would only occasionally see fit to hurt her for it. She would lie there as he grunted and moaned, grinding away on top of her as she just screwed her dark eyes shut and waited for it to be over.

Then he broke her indifference. She remembered the first time he'd torn a cry of pleasure, involuntary and unwanted from her. She hated her body for how it responded to him, her captor, her king. She would wake up in the middle of the night from a half remembered dream, waves of pleasure crashing bewilderingly into revulsion. She recoiled in disgust from her own reactions; if she enjoyed it, she wanted it, deserved it. Her responses blended into one unknowable mass of emotion; was it lust or terror? Need or loathing?

Next he broke her independence. He pushed her beyond endurance, making her stay awake for days with his insatiable desires, when suddenly as soon as she became used to his near constant attendance he would vanish. She found herself crying out for him, his sudden absence more terrifying than his unpredictable presence. He made her need him.

Finally, he crushed her resistance. She was compliant and docile, moving around her palace as if in a dream from which she had no intention of waking. When he wanted her she came, and she fulfilled her role with a sultry, careful deliberation. Anck-Su-Namun was his.

Or, so he believed.

Anck was not like his other girls; she had a far stronger, raw sense of self preservation. She’d been raised to it. She played her part perfectly, allowing him to manipulate her just enough that she could feel his need for her to break drilling into her skin. Instead she bent and contorted to his will; she was not the same person she had been, but she was not the shattered little thing she seemed to have become.

Anck changed. What had initially been a defence mechanism of hyper sexuality to protect herself from the realities of her hell became a part of her nature; she literally couldn't move without eliciting lustful responses from men. It was less about what she actually looked like, as to how she moved, what her hips slow sway told them she looked like. And promised what she might feel like. None of them saw her, and that suited Anck just fine.

None, except for Imhotep, the High Priest. He, empowered by the requirements of his office and his own remarkable powers of self control, saw her. He saw past her elegant movements and carefully constructed expressions, he cut through her pretensions of presentation and voice as easily as if they never were. It irritated, scared and intrigued Anck all at once.

She began to tutor Nefertiri, the Pharaoh's daughter, in the art of combat. Anck's superior strength and skill meant she inevitably won, but Nefertiri hated her with a passion that meant the spats were always brutal and bloodthirsty. Jealousy is always an ugly emotion. It wasn’t until the girl’s were both sixteen that Anck overstepped the mark. The crown Prince reminded her where her boundaries lay, and his father ensured his lesson stuck. Anck never dared to so much as bruise the Princess afterward.

Seti trusted her. In the three years since she had first come to him, Anck-Su-Namun had grown to be invaluable to him, and it was when she was eighteen he began to fold her more into his life, and she became more than the favoured one of his numerous whores.

He began bringing her to court, seating her at his right hand side and treating her with every courtesy and privilege normally only afforded to the queen.

It was there she fell in love with Imhotep.

It was there she realised she would never be free until Seti was dead.

It was there she started down the path that would doom her and her love, for eternity.
